Is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Affecting You?

cleansers Dry Skin Sensitive Skin

Rhonda Allison No SLS Cleansers“On average,  women add more than 200 chemicals to their skin daily, and more than 60% of these chemicals get absorbed directly into the bloodstream.   These combine this with chemicals found in hair care, skin care and dental hygiene products, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate.“

Sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS) were affecting me negatively and I did not know it.  For years I complained to my dentist that the inside of my mouth would peel after I brushed my teeth. Yuck!!  I’m a Baby Boomer, so you know I’ve had the problem for sometime.

Tooth Paste and brush I never received answer to why my skin peeled or how to stop it.   Until 3 years ago.   I brought up my peeling problem again to a local Aiken dentist.  He told me to switch my toothpaste to one without SLS, he suggested JASON Toothpaste.  What do you know, no more peeling inside my mouth.

Toxic Effects on Humans

According to sodium lauryl sulfate’s  Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)  -  Acute Potential Health Effects To Skin: Causes mild to moderate skin irritation.  Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause allergic dermatitis

When sodium lauryl sulfate is used as a cleansing agent found in many OTC facial cleansers, it can leave your skin irritated, stripped of natural humectants and water.   Sensitive skin becomes raw and angry looking, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

I use Rhonda Allison  and Skin Script SLS free cleansers at A Younger You Skin Care Center for all my facials.  Their cleansers have sulfate-free surfactant formulas without sodium lauryl sulfates.

Cleansing With Emulsion Cleanser vs. Cleansing With Water

Washing your face with an emulsion cleanser does no more harm to the Epidermal Barrier than washing with water.

Also, after 21 days a dehydration assessment determined there wasn’t any difference between the water cleansing and the emulsion cleansing, but the lipid content was reduced under the emulsion washing.

Lipids of epidermal  fill the spaces between the cells, like mortar or cement. The sebaceous lipids are primarily non polar lipids as triglycerides, wax esters and squalene, while epidermal lipids are a mixture of ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol.

The NMF barrier system is fragile.  Once disturbed it can possibility lead to one or more of the following conditions: dehydration, stinging, inflammation, sensitization, pigmentation, rosacea, premature aging and acne.
